Carving Station Mounted on Lathe Banjo

During the 2025-03-19 meeting of World Wide Wood Turners, Bob Grinstead showed us his homemade carving station. Here is some information about the station, allowing your to use it to create your own version.

Parts list ($26 for parts from Tractor Supply):

  • 1” – 8 bolt various lengths (3)
  • 1” lock washers (3)
  • 1” – 8 nuts (3)
  • 3” piece of 1” black pipe (1)

Most important part is the hand cut nut.

Threads removed from 1" nut.
Slot in 1" nut

  • Drill the threads out.
  • Cut a slot in the nut to hold a lock washer on its edge.
  • This is used with the lock washer to tighten down on the 1” bolt that holds the chuck.
  • All of the lock washers are straightened out and used as collars for the pipe and the hold down for the chuck post.
