During the 3/29/2023 meeting of the World Wide Wood Turners, Waukeene explained a jig he created to hold turned eggs for sanding.
If you want to create this jig, the following describes the construction. Warning, if you make this jig, remember to drill the holes before you cut the slots … or you may find you have a problem.
First, here is a general plan with measurements that you will need:
… let’s get started:
Start with a 1-1/2″ PVC Schedule 40 pipe. Drill 7/16″ holes ever 45º. Check the construction plans for the initial positioning of the holes.
Cut the PVC pipe to length, 1/4″
Make a 9/16″ inset in the PVC pipe to hold a hose clamp that will be used to tighten in on the eggs begin held. The inset should be about 1/16″ deep. Check the plans for the positioning of the groove.
Slot through each hole, allowing the pipe to flex in and out on the eggs being held.
A 1″ PVC cap will be placed inside the pipe.
Using the lathe, remove the texturing on the tip of the cap
Using the lathe, narrow the diameter of the cap to allow it to fit inside the 1 1/2″ PVC Schedule 40 pipe.
Drill a hole in the end of the cap to be used to help seat the egg.
Once done, insert the cap inside the PVC pipe.
Voila! You have a clamp that will firmly hold your egg for sanding.
