On about 7/15/2020, Dane Chandler provided a demo about using Rit Dye for coloring when finishing. Recently, he provided an article to go along with his Demo on using Rit Dye. The demo is embedded in a longer video. The demo runs from about 00:00:21 to 00:14:17 in the attached video.
You should check out Dane’s demo in the video and head on down to his associated notes for more info.
As an alternative to other makers of dying products Rit Dye is a readily available product for all turners. Most grocery stores stock many colors & even Wallmart has them.
Here is where the instructions can be totally ignored. Granted the dye is made for water usage (in the washing machine), but, we don’t have wash our turnings. The beauty of this product is denatured alcohol works as the medium to dilute and allow the color to readily soak into the wood.
Using a a 4oz squirt bottle, I add about 2oz of denatured alcohol and a couple of drops of the Rit Dye. I shake and add more drops until I have the desired color richness. If you or a friend vapes, use the juice bottles: those bottles work perfectly. A great fact about using the plastic vape juice bottles is the seal provided by the cap; there is no denatured alcohol evaporation.
Once you are ready to apply your color you can apply it directly to the wood with the delicate approach of lace, or by just squirting on and wiping it in. I typically use this coloring on textured raised bowl bands as it creates a 3D effect once your finish is applied. The dye will dry fast and you can even use an air gun to facilitate the drying process. Repeat coats for your desired tone, but always remember, dye is darker once dried. Also remember, you will want apply your sanding sealer after the dying process.
Hope this was helpful.
